Guest Post: Money Making Tips for Writing Mamas

Most  writing mamas  will know how tough it can be to fit writing around work, motherhood and other family commitments, particularly when you are taking on big projects such as novel writing. In fact the irregular pay associated with a career in writing, particularly freelance writing, is thought to be one of the main reasons why writing is amongst one of the highest risk professions for anxiety and depression. But fear not, in the midst of your mammoth projects there are quick, flexible and enjoyable ways for you to earn a little extra income while still honing your craft. Here are a few: Blogging Blogging has taken off in a big way over the last five years and now with an  estimated 152 million blogs on the internet , you could turn your personal website into a mo

Is Entering Writing Contests and Book Awards Worth It?

I have been asked this question more than once during my writing career. At first, I gave the standard answer I learned from my instructor at the ICL…YES! The question you maybe be wondering is has my opinion changed since then…NO. Entering writing contests (Free or Fee Based) is always a good thing. However, you want to make sure the contest you are entering is with a known company or group. I only say this because you want to make sure you’re not paying money or sending your manuscript somewhere no one has ever heard of and to never see again. With that said, I have entered all kinds of contests. Some have been through the Institute of Children’s Literature, Writer’s Digest, League of Utah Writers, Preditors & Editors, Mom’s Choice and other unknown local and national smaller groups and companies.  Winning is always nice, of course, but that isn’t why I enter contests. I do it to hence my writing and submission techniques, to hone my talents and learn from my mistakes

October 2012 HWG Writer's Conference in St. George, Utah

I want to encourage all of you to join us at this exciting event! Regardless of your level of writing experience—from the published author to the uninitiated, never-before-published authors!—this conference has something significant for every participant! Below is a short description of our speakers and their topics for your information and planning! This year, because of the diversity of topics, the number of speakers I was able to procure, and trying to fit everything in during the two days of the event, we have break-out sessions during each day’s programming. I think we have prepared the sessions in such a way that everyone will be able to attend speakers who will be most helpful and informative. Don’t forget that our “Early Bird” registration takes place prior to August 1st, 2012. Take advantage of the significant savings as well as helping us with the organization and planning. Also, the Lexington Hotel, the site of the conference, has reserved a block of

How to use PR/Marketing with Your Blogging - First on BBN

When you hear the word “Marketing”, I’m sure you automatically think…social networking, but what about the other types of marketing, i.e. media releases, banner ads, blog talk radio, online networking groups to name a few. So let’s look at how you can use these marketing avenues outside of just Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, etc. Media Releases I’m sure some of you have at one time or another sent a media release. If you haven’t, it is time to start doing so. You don’t have to pay a PR firm to do this for you. In fact, you can easily do this every time you host a blog hop, guest interview or post, giveaway, and even if you’ve made some changes or updates to your blog such as a new look or addition. Releases are a great way to let local and online media outlets, publishers, companies, PR firms, buzz sites and more know about you.  You can post a media release free or for a small fee if you want to reach a bigger audience. Here are a few of my favorites: https://www.pr.c

Guest Post: Creating Believable Characters

When dealing with fictional characters, it’s crucial to remember that real people rarely know themselves. We often don’t know our minds, we don’t understand why we’re doing some of the things we’re doing, and we cannot really access our subconscious. So what makes a fictional character believable and memorable at the same time? 3 Tips for Creating Believable Characters 1. Pay attention to the world around you Wherever you go, listen to people around you. People from all areas of the country make for interesting speech patterns and distinct dialects. Usually, the uniqueness of a character comes from the writer's ability to make it come to life. For instance, if you have a character from the Deep South, it is probably indicated to give that character a southern accent, so that you make it ring true. For a character to be believable, the character's voice has to be believable. Moreover, you will avoid a static story by using compelling dialogue. 2. Read your f

The Road to Creating a Great Book

Tips from Writer’s Digest and a few Words from Me! Every writer who has ever submitted his work to an agent, editor or publisher in the hopes of getting it published has at one time or another received the dreaded “rejection letter.” But do you wonder how other writers are doing it…getting published? Some will tell you they self-published or started their own publishing house. Others may say they have a friend, who has a friend, who has a friend in publishing. You may wonder if they just happened to scratch the winning lottery ticket. In most cases, these are all true but the one thing they also have done is called the softer side of marketing…or as I like to call it…selling yourself! Writing is more than creating a great book, article, poem or short story. It is about sharing yourself with the world. A great way to do that is by building your author platform. If you are like most of us, you want to devote most of your time to writing. However, it is just as important to build your p

How to Sell Yourself Workshop

How to Sell Yourself with VS Grenier   This workshop is my most requested for writing conferences and by writing groups. Description: It‘s more than writing a good story or article when it comes to being noticed by publishers and editors. Think about it, how many bad books are out there making money? How many awful articles have you read in recent publications? Do you wonder how these writers are getting published and you’re not? Do you think it has to do with the catch 22 system? In some ways, it does, but knowing how to sell yourself is key. You’re not just a writer . . . you’re a Salesman! And the product you’re selling is Yourself! As writers, we are a product, not just our books. Many writers aren't successful because they don't know how to sell themselves; let a lone their writing. This online course is 10 weeks long and includes a teleclass. All assignments will be sent via email by the instructor. Course starts September 11, 2011 and ends Noember 13, 2

OWNING: Only One of You

Martha Graham, a famous dancer and choreographer in the early 20th century, wrote in a letter to one of her students: "There is a vitality, a life force, a quickening that is translated through you into action, and there is only one of you in all time, this expression is unique, and if you block it, it will never exist through any other medium; and be lost. The world will not have it. It is not your business to determine how good it is, not how it compares with other expression. It is your business to keep it yours clearly and directly, to keep the channel open." Graham's words ring true. There is only one of you in the world: The way you think, the way you see things, the way you respond, the way you nurture yourself and other people, the way you go about doing mundane things. The way you love, the way you express, the way you tell a story, the way you write. The world will know of and witness only one you . The totality of you -- talents, nuances, thought proc
