Unlocking Creativity and Personal Growth through Storytelling: A Conversation with Renee Urbanovic

There is something magical about storytelling. It has the power to transport us to different worlds, challenge our perspectives, and trigger a wide range of emotions. In the podcast episode "Unlocking Creativity and Personal Growth through Storytelling," we delve into this power with our guest, Renee Urbanovic, a TEDxTalk speaker, creativity coach, and Humanities through the Arts Professor.

Renee's story is one of triumph over adversity. After suffering a vocal injury that left her voiceless, she earned a degree in creativity and embarked on a journey to understand the complex world of creativity. Her exploration revealed that creativity is not merely a skill or talent, but a global philosophy deeply ingrained within our DNA. This perspective on creativity offers a new lens through which we can view our personal growth and collective evolution.

The episode begins with Renee sharing her unique philosophy on creativity, which she explains through the metaphor of a pot, representing creativity. She also discusses her experience giving a TEDx Talk and how it led her to identify as a creativist, viewing creativity as a worldview. The conversation then shifts to the role of conflict in our personal growth. Renee shares her experiences as a teacher and her journey towards accepting marketing and capitalism within her creative work. She talks about the idea of mindful marketing and conscious capitalism, emphasizing the importance of being conscious and intentional when marketing creative work. This discussion highlights the transformative power of conflict and the profound impact of mindful marketing on our creative pursuits.

One of the most touching parts of the episode is when Renee shares her experiences as a caregiver. The intersection of creativity and caregiving offers a fresh perspective on harnessing creativity as a tool for comfort and growth during challenging times. Renee's story is a testament to the power of story and creativity in overcoming adversity and finding meaning in our experiences. Throughout the episode, Renee's stories serve as a reminder of the transformative power of storytelling. From her personal journey as a mother and artist to the fisherman's haunting encounter with Skeleton Lady, these narratives are not only enlightening but also compelling. They illustrate how storytelling can break generational patterns, shift our worldview, and influence our personal development.

The episode concludes with a discussion on the shift in creative expression and authenticity, examining the power of narrative nonfiction and how truth can speak louder than words. The conversation explores the impact of streaming media on people's stories and the ever-evolving consumerism landscape.

Getting Unstuck: From Fear to Love in a World Gone Sideways

Sometimes, we wake up to find the world changed overnight. At least, it feels that way. In reality, shifts like the ones we’ve been living through don’t happen in an instant—they build over years, quietly at first, until one day it’s undeniable. We find ourselves staring at headlines that make us feel like we’ve stepped into an alternate reality, and the shock is so great we don’t even know how to respond. That’s where this episode of Language of the Soul began: with the feeling of paralysis. Dominick called it out plainly—this chaos is not accidental. It’s part of a strategy as old as authoritarianism itself: overwhelm the public so thoroughly that the shock itself prevents action. When the headlines are one absurdity after another, people shut down. That’s when it becomes easiest to normalize what should never be normalized. I think most of us have felt that paralysis at some point over the past weeks. Whether you lean left, right, or somewhere in between, fear and exhaustion wear...

Families Matter: Halloween Safety Tips

Halloween can be a fun and scary time for kids. Here are a few tips for keeping Halloween safe too. 1. Make sure masks and costumes don't block the vision of your child. Keep props easy to carry and avoid using any prop that has sharp points or edges to prevent injury while trick or treating. 2. Use flashlights, reflector material on the costume, or bright clothing to make sure others see your child, especially vehicles following or driving in the neighborhood. 3. Inspect all candy and treats before allowing children to eat them. Dispose of any that are not sealed properly. Fruits and homemade goodies should only be consumed from those you know, and not strangers. 4. One option to trick or treating might be a small party for your child's friends. Supervision by parents that you know, foods that you are preparing, and having the party at your house all work towards keeping your children safe while providing a fun atmosphere. Games, prizes, and a movie or bonfi...
